Dentistry: The Three Circles

Think of the primary disciplines in your practice as three interlocking circles. Each circle represents one of the three core disciplines in which you much excel in order to succeed in this crazy business we call dentistry.

Circle one represents Clinical Dentistry. Fortunately, most of you are pretty good at this. You spend lots of time at the Seattle Study Club (rainy CE), hanging with Frank Spear (desert CE), or in the halls at the Pankey Institute (tropical CE). This is your biggest circle.

Circle two represents Management. Although you've had little formal training, most of you have grown better at management over the years. You've learned the rudiments of hiring staff, managing collections, and making payroll. You've got a good accountant. Hopefully you've worked with a consultant or attended some practice management workshops with your team. This is your second largest circle.

Circle three represents Marketing. Unfortunately, many of you neglect this circle to a large extent. You know you need patients in the chair in order to do the clinical dentistry -- and in order to have something to even manage. But this circle gets the least amount of your attention. This is your smallest circle.

Think about it for a minute. Picture the energy, education, advisors, time, and money you invest in each circle. Are you giving your Marketing Circle the attention it deserves?
