Fear of Change

President Obama campaigned on "change" and many Americans seemed receptive to the idea. Unfortunately, when it comes to "change" in our dental practices, dentists and staff tend to be much more resistant.
That's because most of us see change as unsettling. However, it often helps to keep change in perspective. And when it comes to perspective, I often think of the following letter that was written in 1829 by the Governor of New York, Martin Van Buren, and sent to the President:
"The canal system of this country is being threatened by the spread of a new form of transportation known as 'railroads' . . . As you may well know, railroad carriages are pulled at the enormous speed of 15 miles per hour by engines, which, in addition to endangering the life and limb of passengers, roar and snort their way through the countryside. The Almighty certainly never intended that people travel at such breakneck speed."
Think back a few years to some of the daunting changes you've implemented in your practice. Today, many of those changes are fully accepted -- simply part of the way you do business. So as you approach new changes, just imagine how natural they will feel in just a few years (even at the breakneck speed of 15 miles per hour!)
